Sustainability
We passionately believe we all have a responsibility to nurture our world and its communities, now and for future generations.
As part of the Sylvamo, the world's paper company, BERGA is committed to sustainable production, responsible sourcing, and innovative solutions that reduce environmental impact.
Our mills: Strength and responsibility
Operating from two strategically located mills - Nymölla (Sweden) and Saillat (France) - BERGA is ideally positioned to serve Europe with shorter transport routes, lower emissions, and faster delivery.
MANAGING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
With two integrated mills in Europe, we deliver from the closest site to reduce transportation distance. Using locally sourced wood, we produce our own pulp and generate the majority of the mills’ fuel requirements on-site. Approximately 94% of the energy at the Nymölla mill and 88% at the Saillat mill is derived from biomass. These measures are designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint. Please contact us for carbon footprint documentation.
EUDR compliance
We are fully aligned with the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), ensuring that every sheet of BERGA paper comes from legally and responsibly sourced fibre. This safeguards biodiversity and reinforces our commitment to sustainable forestry.

Wood Sourcing
All of our fibre is compliant with Sylvamo's global fibre procurement policy and comes from responsibly managed forests. BERGA paper is primarily made of fibre sourced within 125km of our two European mills. Both mills hold FSC (PBN-COC-082008) and PEFC (PBN-PEFC-COC-082008) chain-of-custody certifications, maintaining full wood traceability.
Our Saillat mill in France sources fibre from privately owned forests, using around 35 local tree species. Timber is supplied through our wood-sourcing subsidiary, Comtoir des Bois de Brive (CBB), which harvests responsibly from the surrounding region.
Our Nymölla mill in Sweden partners with a certified supplier to purchase all hardwood and softwood fibre from responsibly sourced forests.
In Europe, wood transportation represents only 2%–6% of our total carbon footprint.
Biodiversity
We support a partnership with WWF France to develop tools that help landowners access the ecological and economic value of individual trees, including the microhabitats they provide.
Through the Forest Carbon Toolbox project, we supported the development of tools and best practices to guide decisions on which trees to harvest, grow for greater carbon and economic value, or conserve for biodiversity.
Together with WWF, we helped establish a teaching forest near our Saillat mill, where forest managers use marteloscope simulations to explore 50-year impacts of different management choices on economics, biodiversity and carbon.
Kraft Packaging
Reels from our Nymölla mill are wrapped in kraft packaging and starting in 2026 our Saillat mill will also move to kraft packaging, showing our investment in uniformity of the service across both mills. Our Saillat mill will be switching from a polyethylene stretch film to a brown kraft paper, which is another step towards reducing our plastic footprint.
Sylvamo 2030 goals
Our parent company is committed to building a better future on the promise of paper. The framework to achieve this is set out in its 2030 goals for sustainable forests, thriving people and communities and responsible operations.

Sylvamo turns water into renewable fuel for transportation industry
Sylvamo’s Nymölla mill in Sweden partners with energy company, Gasum, to convert manufacturing process water into liquified biogas (LBG) to power heavy-duty vehicles, reducing the vehicles’ emissions by up to 90%. The process produces 75 - 90 gigawatt hours of biogas annually, fueling up to 200 long-haul trucks. This innovative water stewardship project provides benefits for the environment by improving water quality and offering a more sustainable alternative to diesel fuel.
By 2030, Sylvamo has a goal to reduce overall water usage by 25% and implement context-based water stewardship plants at all mills.
"We are happy to be part of a project that will turn our water into valuable renewable energy. For Sylvamo, replacing fossil fuels with renewable alternatives is another example of the how the company contributes to a lower carbon economy."
James McDonald, chief sustainability officer, Sylvamo.
